MCRPD

The Mendocino Coast Recreation & Park District (MCRPD) is an independent Special District of the State of California. We provide recreation and park services, from Westport to Gualala.

Mission

To provide opportunities on the Mendocino Coast that promote physical and mental well-being for everyone, through active play, community enrichment, programs and events.

Partnerships

C. V. Starr Community Center

In 1978, using Park Bond Act monies, MCRPD obtained a five acre parcel known as Green Memorial Field in central Fort Bragg, and in 2006, began construction of its new facility at this location. The C. V. Starr Foundation provided more than $20 million dollars in funding support for the facility, and in August of 2009 the C. V. Starr Community Center and Sigrid and Harry Spath Aquatic Facility opened to the public.

In March, 2012 the City of Fort Bragg partnered with MCRPD. With the voter approved passage of Measure A, the funding of C. V. Starr Center operations was made possible by the combination of a City of Fort Bragg half-cent sales tax and allocation of MCRPD property tax revenue. The C. V. Starr Center is owned by the City of Fort Bragg and operated by the MCRPD in accordance with an Operating Agreement between the two entities.

The C. V. Starr Community Center premises includes a 25-yard, 8-lane lap pool; leisure pool with beach, spray features, lazy river and large water slide; group exercise room, spin room; cardio and fitness room; multi-purpose rooms; petanque courts; skate park; dog park; and picnic area.

Kudos for Kids and ASSETS

MCRPD, in partnership with the Fort Bragg Unified School District, operates the Kudos for Kids and ASSETS after school programs, serving students in grades K-12.

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

MCRPD is also the title owner of the 47 acre Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, obtained for public ownership through a grant from the California Coastal Conservancy. MCRPD leases the facility to the non-profit Botanical Gardens Corporation, which is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the facility.

South Coast Programs

Though MCRPD does not own or operate any facilities in the Point Arena area, it supports and sponsors South Coast programs and activities, and has developed a partnership with the Redwood Coast Recreation Center in the development of a Recreation Center adjacent to Bower Park east of Gualala. The popular summer week long, youth swim lessons are also offered on the South Coast.

Westport Community Center

MCRPD, FBUSD and the Westport Village Society have partnered to renovate the old schoolhouse in Westport to create the Westport Community Recreation Center. Drop-in fitness classes, enrichment programs and other community functions are offered at the Center.
